The Department of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Nursing of Laxmi Memorial College of
Nursing in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, AJ Institute of
Medical sciences, Mangaluru observed “World BreastFeeding Day” on 3rd August 2023 at
AJIMS, postnatal ward, Kuntikana Mangaluru on the theme “Enabling Breast Feeding:
Making a difference for working Parents”.The program was conducted with the aim to
advocate breastfeeding-friendly practices in hospitals and create awareness among women
and the public to support breastfeeding.
Dr. Fatima Ismath Senior Resident Gynecologist, Dept of OBG AJIMS was the resource
person for the program and she delivered a health talk to the gathered audience and said that
breastfeeding helps in bonding and reduces the risk of diabetic mellitus and uterine cancers in
mothers. She also stressed breastfeeding is the best food for babies, it improves their
intelligence and social skills and lowers the risk of coronary heart disease. She called the
health care professionals to be the ambassadors to promote and support breastfeeding. Dr.
Pradeep Ganiga Professor and HOD Dept. of OBG AJIMS congratulated the team for the
excellent organization of the program. Dr. Larissa Martha Sams, Principal of Laxmi
Memorial College of Nursing presided over the program in her address said that
breastfeeding is a natural phenomenon and it is important to support working mothers to
breastfeed their babies. Dr. Sandhya D Almeida Professor and HOD Dept. of OBG Nursing
unveiled the significance of the breastfeeding week. The program was attended by 50
antenatal and post-natal mothers. Ms. Chinchu welcomed and Mrs. Savitha compared the
program.
